Object Column Without a Formatter Copy Link

The column named in the message holds values the grid treats as the 'object' cell data type. An object has no single sensible way to be shown in a cell, or to be turned back into a value after editing, so the grid cannot supply one. Until you provide it, cells show the result of calling toString() on the value, usually [object Object].

Which one the message asks for tells you which half is missing:

• Value Formatter: the column cannot be displayed. Raised for any object column.
• Value Parser: the column cannot be edited. Raised only when the column has editable: true.

Was the type inferred? Copy Link

(inferred) means the grid worked the type out from your data rather than being told it. Inference reads the value at the column's field and falls back to 'object' when it matches none of the pre-defined types, so an inferred object column usually means the field holds a nested object, an array, or a class instance. If that is unexpected, check what the field contains.

Without (inferred), cellDataType: 'object' was set explicitly on the column, its column type, or the default column definition.

Where several columns hold the same shape of object, define your own cell data type once and point the columns at it. Adding a dataTypeMatcher also lets inference pick your type rather than falling back to 'object'. See Providing Custom Cell Data Types.

Set cellDataType: false on the column to disable inference, or on the default column definition to disable it everywhere. Alternatively set a valueGetter to derive a primitive from the object, which also prevents inference.
