AI Assistant

The AI Assistant lets you build and change a report by describing what you want.

AG Studio provides the AI Assistant panel, along with the instructions and tools an AI uses to work on a report, but not the AI itself. The AI is a service your team connects during setup, such as OpenAI or Anthropic. Through the AI Assistant, you can create Widgets, add filters and rearrange the page without opening the configuration panels.

Try It Copy Link

The report below holds daily weather data for 39 world cities and opens on a blank page. It is connected to an AI service for this demonstration. Choose one of the suggested prompts at the bottom of the AI Assistant, or type a request of your own. Use the picker beside the send button to choose the AI model.

Agents and Setup Copy Link

AG Studio does not handle a request in one step. It splits the work between a coordinator and specialised agents that plan the report, query the data, arrange the page and configure each Widget, and each agent uses the AI service your team connected. What you type becomes actions in the report, such as adding a Widget or changing a filter.

Because the AI comes from the service your team chose, the quality and behaviour of responses depend on that service. Your team can also switch to a different AI service.

The AI Assistant appears only when your team has connected an AI service. If you cannot see it, check with whoever manages your AG Studio installation.

Once an AI service is connected, the AI Assistant appears by default on the left in Edit Mode, as a conversation alongside the report. By default, View Mode shows only the Filters Panel, and your developer can change which panels appear in each mode. For an overview of the panels, see User Interface.

What the AI Can Change Copy Link

Through the AI Assistant, the AI can:

  • Add, move, resize, configure and remove Widgets.
  • Add and remove Page Filters and Widget Filters.
  • Create, change and delete Calculated Columns added in Studio, including ones you created. See Calculations.

It cannot change the fields your developer provides.

The AI works on the page you are viewing, unless you ask it to work on another page. Any changes it makes to another page appear when you go to that page.

Threads Copy Link

Each conversation lives in a thread. You can keep several threads, for example one for building a sales report and another for exploring inventory data.

Threads are not part of the report, so saving the report does not save the conversation. Whether your threads are still there tomorrow depends on how your team set up the AI Assistant. If they have connected somewhere to store conversations, threads are kept between visits. If not, threads last only as long as the page is open, and are gone when you reload it.

To start a new thread, click the New button in the AI Assistant header. To switch between threads, click the thread name and select from the list.

A new thread appears in the list once you send its first message. It is labelled New chat until the AI names it after the work it covers, and the AI renames it if the subject changes.

Type messages in the input field at the bottom of the panel. Press Enter to send, or Shift+Enter to start a new line without sending.

Effective Requests Copy Link

You can ask the AI Assistant for things in everyday language, for example:

  • "Create a dashboard with KPIs for total revenue, average order value, and customer count"
  • "Add a bar chart showing sales by product category"
  • "Show me [Field] by [Category]"
  • "What are the trends in [numeric field] over time?"
  • "Move the pie chart to the top right corner"
  • "Add a date filter for the last 12 months"

More specific requests produce better results. Instead of "Make me a dashboard", try "Build a sales dashboard showing revenue by region, a top-10 products table, and monthly sales trends". Using the real field names helps the AI understand the data.

Complex reports often come together better over several requests than in one long one. When a result is not what you wanted, describe the change rather than starting again, for example "Change the bar chart to a line chart" or "Add a quarterly breakdown".

Progress Updates Copy Link

When you send a message, the AI works through the request in stages, and a thinking indicator shows while it is working. For a complex request it may make a plan first, and hand parts of the work to the specialised agents for layout, Widget configuration and data queries. When it finishes, it summarises what it did.

A plan appears as a card in the conversation. Each action the AI takes appears as a step, and a step handed to a specialised agent opens to show that agent's own steps.

After it configures the Widgets, the AI checks them for problems, such as a chart with no values, and fixes what it finds.

Models and Suggested Prompts Copy Link

Your developer can add two options to the AI Assistant:

  • A model picker beside the Send button, for choosing which AI model answers. Some models also offer a choice of effort. Each thread keeps the model it was last set to, and a new thread starts on the model you picked most recently.
  • Suggested prompts in an empty thread. Click one to send it as if you had typed it. They are shown only until the thread's first message.

Data Sharing Copy Link

AG Studio does not contact the AI service itself. Requests go through the connection your developer set up, and that connection decides what is sent.

A request usually includes the conversation so far and a description of your data, such as table and field names. Rows of data are sent only when the AI reads them, for example when it runs a query to answer a question.

If your data is sensitive, ask your developer which AI service your team uses and what it receives.

Limitations Copy Link

The AI works best when the data has clear field names and descriptions, and when requests use business terms rather than technical ones. It can only work with the data sources currently loaded in Studio.

It may not choose the best chart on the first attempt, and unusual business rules may need to be explained. How quickly it responds, and how accurate its suggestions are, depend on the AI service your team has connected, not on AG Studio. If a result is not quite right, follow up with a more specific request.
